Given that anxiety is worrying about the future and depression is dwelling on the past, mindfulness, staying in the present moment, is the ideal mindset.
How does this help with stress and anxiety? When we are mindful, we can put space between our thoughts, notice our feelings, and choose our response. Rather than being emotionally led by the nose, or rather ego in this case, when we slow our thoughts, recognize what is actually real in this very moment, we give ourselves the space and time to choose what, if any, action is truly necessary right here and now. I like to ask myself, “What do I want to feel?” We truly only have control only over our choices. Slowing our thoughts gives us the ability to powerfully choose our response with intention.
